No sé realmente cómo fue que comenzó el fuego. Tampoco, si la tragedia se agudizó a pesar de los esfuerzos por controlar el daño. Lo relevante es que la universidad se quemó. O al menos, lo que hasta entonces habían construido, se destruyó. Fue el 23 de abril de 1879. El Padre Edward Sorin, reunió a los sobrevivientes, quienes habían dedicado su vida a un proyecto del que sólo quedaban cenizas. Esta es una traducción dramatizada de su discurso:
-«¿Saben por qué se quemó la Universidad? Por que la construimos demasiado pequeña. Soñamos corto. Cualquier aplauso nos complacía. Se ha quemado para que la imaginemos más grande, para reconstruirla para otro nivel, para llenarnos el corazón con unos ideales más ambiciosos y universales».
«I came here as a young man and dreamed of building a great university in honor of Our Lady. But I built it too small, and she had to burn it to the ground to make the point. So tomorrow as soon as the bricks cool, we will rebuild it, bigger and better than ever»La universidad que construyeron es la Universidad de Notre Dame.
I hate to talk with the advantage of hindsight but there was a poor damage control right at the beginning--right when the fire started--, when the University launched their first communication and when the president of the Sociedad de Alumnos gave his speech.
